A Lunch Break with the Hobart Corporation

Thursday, July 3rd, 2014

Hobart Equipment | Short OrderAt Short Order when we work hard, we have to treat ourselves to a lunch break now and then. Today, join What’s Cooking as we learn about the Hobart Corporation.

Before the Kitchen Appliances

With a hundred years of experience combined with an innovative track record, the Hobart Corporation has a story that is compelling and deserving of recognition. It all began in 1897, when the Hobart Electric Manufacturing Company was formed. A strategic and pivotal backbone for the company, it allowed the company to pursue and invest in various product lines such as the electric meat choppers in 1905 or the Model A-80 Mixer, which dominated the commercial mixer market. The company would reorganize itself in 1913 as the Hobart Manufacturing Company and sales would go beyond an impressive $1 million mark that same year. But the Hobart Corporation has never stopped innovating. It would go on to create a whole list of unique products like the first potato slicer, the world’s largest commercial mixer, the first electric slicer, and the classic SaniQuick Cold Water Glasswasher.

Longevity Is Spelled “H-O-B-A-R-T”

The best part about all of these great products is their longevity. Take for example the Hobart Mixer. Back in 1990, the Hobart Corporation recognized the durability of the product with a contest: “Oldest Running Hobart Mixer.” The contest drew 6,000 entries and the winning mixer was a Hobart mixer that was built in 1919 that was originally built and sold to Von Hatten’s Bakery in Fort Smith, AR. And this is just one of the many products that Hobart Corporation prides itself on.

Hobart Slicers: No Worries Mate!

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

In 2012, we all will experience extraordinary things. We will also worry and think a lot too. Some of us will concern ourselves with the potential for Doomsday, The Rapture, the Great Shift or whatever you want to call it. Oh, and by golly, others will think about iPhone apps, Jersey Shore and maple syrup. But, you – you also probably will have to agonize over serving delicious food, counting expenses, and whether your restaurant equipment will stay operational the rest of this year. While we might not be able to help you alleviate apprehension at global chaos, what will happen with Pauly and Vinny on television, or what to put on your pancakes; when it comes to cutting meats, cheeses and veggies, we’ve got you covered with a nice selection of Hobart Slicers.

Since every day is a new chance to relish in new experiences, the last thing you should do is lose sleep over restaurant equipment, especially slicers. We like to describe Hobart Slicers in similar terms to how our favorite blokes from Down Under say “no worries.” We truly mean that you will have no worries with these fantastic machines, because when it comes to quality slicing and durability, these slicers are definitely some of the best. Besides, when you are cutting, slicing and dicing in a high volume operation, slicers will get their share of wear and tear and so will your employees. Those of you who have been in the industry awhile probably know this quite well. A good slicer like the Hobart Slicer 2912-1 will make life a whole lot easier on everyone.

Hobart Slicers aren’t cheap, but you also won’t receive shoddy and inferior equipment either. Over the long haul, whichever Hobart Slicer you choose for your establishment will most certainly give you more bang for the buck. What’s our advice? Save all the agony, make it a good year and buy restaurant equipment that lasts.

Hobart Slicers: Become a Restaurant Samurai

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

You could spend your life looking for the perfect slice and it would not be a wasted one. It would be a journey in search of the cleanest, almost legendarily precise cut through the softest cheeses and thickest meats. This is a path in search of razor sharp efficiency, reliability and toughness. A skill not unlike tapping into slicing power of an ancient katana, commonly referred to as a “samurai sword.”  Yet, you need not travel to far off lands or learn the “way of the sword” to uncover the perfect cut for your culinary needs. At Short Order, we carry a selection of Hobart Slicers that are a cut above the rest.

While you could delicately carve exceedingly beautiful selections of turkey, hard salami, pepperjack and provolone with the exactness of an ancient Japanese blade, using a samurai sword to slice your ingredients would likely become quite exhausting if not dangerous. However, using Hobart Slicers, you can still unleash your food cutting warrior ethos. For example, the Hobart Slicer EDGE-1 features a 12” contoured carbon steel knife driven by a 1/3 horsepower motor. The top mounted Borazon stone sharpener will sharpen and hone the blade in five seconds. The gauge plate interlock and permanently mounted ring guard also help protect the knife-edge when cleaning or in operation. For optimum efficiency, the Poly V belt runs at 370 rpm, making slicing easy. The one-piece sanitary anodized aluminum base, removable carriage system and removable rear deflector make cleaning simple. All Hobart Slicers received our editors 5-Star rating and the the Edge-1 and the Hobart Slicer 2712-1 also are picked as our Editors Choice.

For restaurant equipment that lets you summon your inner samurai and helps you cut a noble path through both difficult and supple food items, look no further than Hobart Slicers from Short Order. Happy slicing and sayonara, until next time.

That’s why Hobart glass washers from Hobart are a perfect choice to help make a hard-pressed night behind the bar just a little bit easier.

For bartenders, challenges such as demanding patrons, spilled drinks and changing beer taps are all in a good night’s work. And during the bar rush, multi-tasking takes on a whole new meaning. However, with Hobart glass washers, the during and after dish cleanup is a cinch. With an ability to clean and sanitize 30 racks per hour, your bar or restaurant staff can focus on what you do best – serving customers and spending less time stopping to find clean glasses.  Hobart glass washers provide the quality you’ve come to expect from the makers of Hobart slicers.

The Hobart Glass Washer LXIGH+BUILDUP/208-240/1 is a great choice for fast, hot water cleaning that gets out of the bartender’s way. With dimensions of 24″W x 33.75″H x 26.75″D, this washing system easily fits under most countertops and offers convenient access without obstructing the flow of employee traffic behind the bar. Likewise, the Hobart Glass Washer LXIH-3 also offers hot water sanitation and, with dimensions of 26.9375″W x 33.75″H x 26.75″D, is just slightly larger than its LXIGH counterpart.

If you would prefer the advantages of a great Glass Washer using chemical sanitation instead of hot water, the Hobart Glass Washer LXIC-5 is another excellent choice. This fabulous machine also fits under most countertops with dimensions of 23.9375″W x 33.75″H x 26.75″D.

All three Hobart glass washers received 5-Star ratings at Short Order, your leading choice for top-notch restaurant equipment, and come with automatic fill, two dish racks, upper and lower anti-clogging wash arms and more.

Hobart glass washers can not only help eliminate at least one bartender nightmare for your bar or restaurant, but you can also be a hero to your staff too.

Hobart Slicers: A Spotlight

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

Hobart slicers are industry leaders, forerunners in the field of technology that develops whirring blades to slice up food into perfectly uniform, customizable slices at rapid speeds.  (Being big fans of concision, we’d like to think that there’s a more pithy, direct term for this field that nevertheless manages to be extremely precise; alas, we have come up empty.  Perhaps in German there’s an agglutinated monstrosity of a word that we could borrow.  Perhaps not.  Either way, we digress.)

Yes, that’s right, folks, Hobart slicers are among the best food slicers money can buy.  Whether you want thick slices of ham to arrange for a buffet, shaved slices of turkey for a delectable club sandwich, or anything in between (do they make tofu-based meat substitutes in lunch meat form?), Hobart’s array of machines will get the job done for you.

It’s not as though Hobart slicers don’t get the praise they deserve.  After all, we rate them all five-star selections, and bestow them with our Editor’s Choice designation to boot.  As if that wasn’t enough, many of Hobart’s products are voted Best in Class by Food Service Equipment Supplies Magazine, a respectedindustry publication.  That’s no small shakes!

If you have your rapid food slicing needs all squared away and are instead looking for another piece to complete the commercial kitchen of your dreams, check out the selection we offer here at Short Order.  We have the solutions to all your restaurant kitchen needs—well, everything except the cooks!  We assume you’ve got that part covered.  Whether you’re looking for something to chill your drinks (Manitowoc ice machines, anyone?), fry your foods (Frymaster fryers would do the trick here), or saute just about anything under the sun (using, say, Vulcan ranges), we’ve got just the piece of restaurant equipment you need.

Restaurants Redefine the Salad

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Restaurants around the country are redifining the salad in order to give customers what they want. And they don’t just want a plate of iceberg lettuce — customers want a salad that’s filling, healthy and on par with an entree.

Not too long ago, salads were merely ordered as a side, or when someone didn’t see anything on a restaurant menu that they liked. A last resort, a way to appear healthy, ordering a salad is now neither of those things because consumers really, truly are paying attention to eating healthier meals.

A recent article in QSR Magazine talks about this new, growing trend in restaurants. The article noted that Technomic Information Services’ “Salad Category Report” showed 55 percent of consumers said they ordered a salad most of the time or every time when they dine away from home. This report also showed that if a salad is unique, new and sounds appealing, 43 percent of consumers are likely to purchase it.

Hobart food cutterFast food restaurants are even working to meet the demands of consumers by offering affordable salads. It’s a good move for fast food restaurants, since the National Restaurant Association’s 2008 Restaurant Industry Forecast found that entree salads are growing in popularity, according to 59 percent of quick-service operators. What’s more is that they found 76 percent of consumers are trying to eat more healthfully now than they did two years ago.

Restaurant Equipment to Make Salads

Restaurant equipment to make salads is a necessity — just having fresh, delicious ingredients isn’t enough to get the job done. If you’re serving up tasty salads at your restaurant, you’ll need a way to keep the carrots, lettuce, cucumbers, sprouts, dressings and anything else you’ll have on hand at a safe temperature. Kolpak walk-in refrigerators can get that job done. And to give chefs and restaurant staff members a place to chop and dice ingredients, you’ll want a quality commercial work table. Hobart food cutters are also worth considering, as they could help get food prep work done more quickly and efficiently. Get the lowest prices on restaurant equipment at ShortOrder.

Buying Restaurant Equipment: 10 Tips

Monday, September 29th, 2008

pizza ovenBuying restaurant equipment can be a daunting, even frightening task.  Restaurant equipment is not what you would call inexpensive, so you want to make sure you get the right equipment for your restaurant the first time.  To assist you in this endeavor, we created buyer’s guides on our site which enable you to make the best decision.  However, we thought that we would go a step further and provide you with some tips on buying restaurant equipment.

Buying Restaurant Equipment: Tip One

Make sure you do your research.  When buying restaurant equipment, it is best to go into the shopping mode with a full knowledge of what type of equipment you need, what the average cost is, as well as what features are the most important to you.

Buying Restaurant Equipment: Tip Two

One of the most frustrating things that can happen when buying restaurant equipment is getting your new brand new refrigerator or prep table and realizing that you don’t have adequate space for it.  Please measure your space and know the required dimensions of the equipment you are buying.

Buying Restaurant Equipment: Tip Three

Confirm if your equipment needs to be gas-powered or electric.  Your new pizza oven wouldn’t do you much good if it was electric and your restaurant was running on gas.

Buying Restaurant Equipment: Tip Four

Speaking of electricity – you will want to make sure that your new equipment won’t blow a fuse once you plug it in.  Check your available amps and then make sure that your new icemaker doesn’t require more than you have.

Manitowoc ice machineBuying Restaurant Equipment: Tip Five

When buying restaurant equipment, whether for a new restaurant or as a replacement, try and not get so excited that you buy more equipment that you actually need or can use.  Do you really need three microwave ovens?

Buying Restaurant Equipment: Tip Six

If you are concerned about your environment, you will want to buy restaurant equipment that is Energy Star rated; which means the steamer or dishwasher you are buying meets the high standards of energy efficiency established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Buying Restaurant Equipment: Tip Seven

Just as we mentioned in step one, doing your research is important and knowing the manufacturer of your restaurant equipment is just as important.  Make sure that you are buying restaurant equipment that is manufactured by a respectable company with an impeccable history of quality.

Buying Restaurant Equipment: Tip Eight

Know your financial limits when buying restaurant equipment.  Make sure that the brand-new walk-in with all the fun and exciting bells and whistles meets your needs and doesn’t go over your budget.

Buying Restaurant Equipment: Tip Nine

Before you go out and buy all the restaurant equipment you could ever want and need, it is best to contact your local health, fire and building code department to ensure your equipment will be code compliant.

Buying Restaurant Equipment: Tip Ten

Finally, you will want to buy your restaurant equipment from a dependable and high quality dealer that stands behind everything they sell.  This is where ShortOrder.com comes in.  At ShortOrder.com you know that you are getting the highest quality restaurant equipment from top manufacturers, such as Vulcan, Hobart, Manitowac, and Beverage-Air.

We hope that these restaurant equipment buying tips were helpful.  However, if you find that you still have some questions; please feel free to give one of our customer service agents a call.  They are more than happy to help.

Restaurant Equipment Dealers Busy as Business Improves

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Restaurant equipment dealers are starting to get a little busier this month, and that could be attributed to the restaurant industry seeing an overall improvement to business compared to the past few months.

Restaurant Equipment Dealers Enjoy Business Increase

According to an article that appeared last week on Forbes.com and on the Associated Press wire, privately-held restaurant chains, single locations and locations that have been open at least one year were down in August in 42 percent of the respondent restaurants.  However, these same restaurants are starting to see an increase in their sales this month, possibly due to the easing up of gas prices. This means that restaurant equipment dealers are seeing a business increase as well.

Restaurant Equipment Dealers See the Light

The article also stated that publicly-held restaurant companies are starting to see nice improvements in their stocks, with some stocks increasing by almost two dollars a share.  This light at the end of the business slump tunnel is great for everyone in the restaurant industry, including restaurant equipment dealers, as each section of the industry depends on the sales in the restaurants.  Though this means people in the restaurant industry are busy, it’s safe to say they’re probably not complaining.

Restaurant Equipment Dealers Have What You Need

With an increase in business in September and with the busy holiday season fast approaching, this might be a great time to check out all of your restaurant equipment and make sure that it is all up to snuff.  ShortOrder has the widest selection of commercial kitchen equipment at great prices.  We carry commercial ranges, ice machines, refrigerators and so much more from companies like Manitowoc, Vulcan, Hobart, Beverage-Air and Frymaster.

If you are finding that some of your equipment is in need of replacing, make sure to contact one of ShortOrder’s restaurant equipment specialists.
