Tips for Accommodating Vegans at Your Restaurant

Whether for health, ethical, or environmental reasons, more and more people are embracing veganism as a lifestyle choice these days. Veganism, which is broadly defined as the practice of abstaining from any food products or material goods made from animals, is especially popular among millennials, who are a key customer base for eating establishments everywhere. This means savvy restaurateurs should consider adapting their menu to get in on the trend and accommodate vegans, so here are a few tips to help get you started.

  • Begin ordering and using vegan-friendly ingredients such as soy-based products, tofu, seitan, portobello mushrooms, tempeh, and textured vegetable protein.
  • Tweak and test popular vegan dishes that complement the other selections on your menu or the general theme of your restaurant. For example, if you serve Mexican food, try adding loaded tofu tacos as a vegan option. If you serve burgers or other meat dishes, round out the menu with a portobello mushroom burger, black bean quinoa burger, or barbecue seitan skewers.
  • Purchase commercial food preparation equipment that will help you make the new vegan dishes you wish to add to the menu. Char broilers are especially versatile in this regard and would be an excellent investment for any kitchen.
  • Clearly label the vegan items on your menu to help customers, servers, and kitchen staff identify the choices quickly and easily. This not only reduces the chances of mistakes but also eliminates the need for customers to cobble together their own meal by picking out acceptable bits and pieces from non-vegan entrees.
  • Consider instituting “Meatless Mondays” or similar events to promote healthier choices to all patrons. Going meatless for a day gives your kitchen staff the opportunity to experiment with seasonal produce or local food sources as well as attract new customers.
  • Be willing to change your vegan dishes with the seasons. Since so many vegan dishes rely on fresh produce, it can get quite expensive to offer certain options all year round. Changing the menu with the seasons will help keep costs in line.

Remember, when just one person in a group of five diners is vegan, the entire group must go to a restaurant that can accommodate the vegan’s choices. If your establishment can’t do that, you’re losing the business of five customers, not one. Modifying your menu to include more vegan choices isn’t that hard to do and makes a lot of sense for the bottom line, so try implementing a few of the above tips now.
