Prepare Your Restaurant for Fall & Everything it Brings

Chefs in a Restaurant KitchenFall is here, and it’s time to get ready for the changes the autumn season brings. No, not the changes in the leaves; the ones that are relevant to the restaurant industry. That means:

  • Football season
  • Back-to-school
  • Colder weather
  • Holidays approaching

 

Football season means piles of guys coming in asking for beer, finger foods (usually fried), and a clear view of The Game on one (or several) flat screen TVs. At the minimum, you’re going to want to change the filters on your deep fryers and your ice machines in order to keep them producing the freshest food and drinks they can. Also, if you haven’t already switched to craft beer on tap, this is the best time to do it.

Back-to-school brings families with their kids into restaurants either as a reward for some job well done at school or simply because the parents are too exhausted to make and clean up after dinner that night. You’re going to want to double-check your kids’ menus and your supply of kids’ items, and maybe even talk to your servers about how to interact pleasantly with children even when they’re being disruptive.

Colder weather means it’s time to consider adding seasonal items to the menu that take advantage of the chills. From the holiday traditions like stuffing, hot buttered rum, and caramel-apple desserts to simple shifts like fewer salads and more thick and hearty soups, clever menu changes can keep your offerings relevant and keep the customers coming back.

The holidays are approaching and you can expect to have a few predictable days when your crew and equipment are taxed to their limits. Before those days come, the wise will have experts come in and perform regular maintenance on all of their equipment, and replace anything that the experts aren’t certain will make it through to 2015. Along these same lines, make sure that any staff members that aren’t familiar with the stress of a major holiday event get training and are ready for the onslaught.

Finally, consider decorating for the season. Those changes in the leaves aren’t entirely irrelevant after all; sprucing up your interior with a bit of extra orange, gold, red, and tan can help you evoke the feel of Fall and make your menu changes seem even more relevant to your customers. It doesn’t take much, and the advantages are subtle, but these fall preparations are important to keeping your customers comfortable and coming back for more.
