Manitowoc Ice Machines: Proudly Green

Chances are, if you’re a regular follower of this blog, you know how much we appreciate the masterpieces of manufacturing that are Manitowoc ice machines.  There are a host of reasons for this appreciation.  They include, in an unordered and certainly incomplete list, their resiliency, their quality, their efficiency, and their excellent warranty (not that you’re likely to ever need to use it).

Well, we can go ahead and add another reason to love Manitowoc ice machines to this too-short list: their greenness.

Now, from a corporate perspective, it’s very trendy these days to pronounce yourself “green.”  One of the more frustrating things about the “green” term is that it is so nebulous that companies often toss it around without anything concrete to back it up.  Manitowoc is different.  According to a Manitowoc press release we found while cruising around on their site (yes, we do do that), upwards of 175 different Manitowoc ice machine models have been certified by the California Energy Commission.

Sure, 175 sounds like a lot, but Manitowoc has, what, 63 billion models?  Not so!  The press release goes on to say that over 97% of all Manitowoc cube ice machines meet or exceed strict standards put in place by groups such as the California Energy Commission or Energy Star.  That’s a significant chunk, and that’s certainly something to be proud of.

Another great, marginally related tidbit points out that Manitowoc ice machines come in a wide range of sizes, ranging from efficient ones that put out 30 pounds of ice daily to workhorses that pump out 1,800 pounds of ice in a 24-hour period.  Eighteen hundred pounds of ice!  Imagine how many perfectly chilled glasses of lemonade you could help facilitate with that!  It’s making our mouths water just considering the possibilities.

Globe Slicers: Slicing and, er, Slicing

All right, we’ll own up to it: our thing for Globe slicers is real, and it’s legitimate.  Nothing against Hobart slicers, which we find to be similarly wonderful machines, but there’s just something about Globe slicers that drives us to a bloggable frenzy.  Maybe it’s their peerless machining.  Perhaps its their sleek, efficient design.  It could also be their virtually intuitive ease of use.  You know what?  It’s probably a combination of all of that and more.  Regardless, we’re huge fans of Globe slicers, and we think any commercial kitchen operator would be a similarly all-in convert if they ever got their hands on one.  You’ll never look at a block of cheese or deli meat in the same way after a Globe slicer makes short work of it, and that’s the truth.

It’s no secret that Globe slicers are magnificent pieces of restaurant equipment.  We say it’s no secret because Globe slicers are the recipients of significant amounts of accolades.  Consider the fact that, in-house, we have an editing team in charge of rating all of the products we carry.  Many of the products Globe manufactures, such as Globe slicers, meat grinders, and mixers are rated particularly highly.  Some are even designated with an Editor’s Choice rating, which means we consider them to be above and beyond our typically excellent range of offerings.

If you’ve been a follower of this space for any significant length of time (and by “significant,” we’d say, oh, a week), you’re likely to know that we have a bit of a thing for ice machines.  Yeah, it’s definitely a “thing,” now, having been upgraded from a “hankering” and having long since passed an “affinity.”  Our “thing” for ice machines hasn’t evolved into an “obsession” just yet—we’re not weird, after all!

Ahem.  At any rate, semi-regular followers of What’s Cooking are also likely to know that our ice machine “thing” is pretty focused on the wonderful world of Manitowoc ice machines in particular.  The reasons for this are pretty straightforward: Manitowoc ice machines are efficient, well-made, an excellent value, and the industry leaders.  Pretty straightforward, isn’t it?  However, you might be a bit more dedicated to our blog to know that our ice machines love is by no means exclusive to the Manitowoc brand.  Indeed, we’re fairly egalitarian when it comes to our appreciation of the ice machines we stock.  We just write about Manitowoc more than the other guys because we can get into a groove like that.

Here’s probably the best way we can put it: We choose to stock every piece of restaurant equipment that we offer.  Nobody’s slipping unwanted rice cookers into our warehouses when we’re not looking.  What’s more, we’re pretty discerning folks: When we choose the equipment we stock, we only choose the best.  That means, in addition to Manitowoc ice machines, we also offer Ice O Matic ice machines, Hoshizaki ice machines, and Scotsman ice machines.  We fully stand behind all of these products as exemplary, and bound to get the job done with efficiency and aplomb.  You might not associate a word like “aplomb” with an ice machine, but we certainly do.  You might change your mind after you give one of these masterful products a try.
